Ayam Cemani – Day-Old Chicks
Mysterious. Striking. Unlike anything else in the poultry world.
Our Ayam Cemani chicks come from carefully selected fibro-genetic breeding lines, known for their deep, rich pigmentation and calm, alert temperaments. This rare Indonesian breed is famous for its dramatic all-black appearance — feathers, skin, comb, legs, and even the tongue. Their plumage often shines with an iridescent green or violet sheen in the sun, giving them a truly magical presence in the flock.
The unique coloring comes from fibromelanosis, a genetic trait that fully matures as the birds reach 1–3 years of age. As with all Cemani in the U.S., pigment intensity can vary from bird to bird, and some chicks may show lighter areas or genetic “leakage” as they develop. This is a natural part of working with such a rare and still-stabilizing breed.
Egg Color:
Although the birds themselves are jet black, their eggs are not — hens lay cream to tinted eggs, beginning around 5–6 months of age, averaging two eggs per week.Size & Build:
Ayam Cemani are moderate in size, sleek, and athletic.
Roosters: ~4.5–6.5 lbs
Hens: ~3.5–4.5 lbs
While the breed originated as a dual-purpose bird, today they are most treasured for their rarity, beauty, and cultural significance. Some hens may go broody, though mothering instincts can vary from line to line.
If you’re looking for a truly extraordinary breed with a fascinating history and unforgettable appearance, the Ayam Cemani is a showstopper in every flock.
